Centre to set up HCs in N-E states

New Delhi: The Centre will set up separate high courts in all states of the Northeast. The first will come up in Nagaland.

The Nagaland high court will be set up soon while separate high courts in all north-eastern states will come up phasewise, Union law minister H.R. Bhardwaj said at a national conclave on "Access to Justice for the Women of the Northeast" here.

"Women are finding difficulty in getting justice. We have been making laws but they are not percolated to the grassroots level," he said, according to an agency report.

The government was holding dialogues with village elders to bring the traditional justice system of the region into the mainstream, Mr Bhardwaj said, adding, "Some of our best judges have come from the Northeast".

In his speech, Supreme Court Justice Ashok Bhan said the women's movement for justice is of utmost importance in the ongoing armed conflict situation prevalent in the Northeast.

"The violence faced by women often takes the form of sexual, mental or physical abuse, killings and clashes. Although all the members of the communities are affected by the armed conflict, the impact on women and girls is far greater because of their status in our society and their gender," he said.
