Lucknow: A Dalit woman was gang raped by four men and later beaten to death in an Uttar Pradesh village, police said Friday.

The woman, 25, was raped at her home in Badrikapurwa village of the state's Sitapur district, about 100 km from Lucknow.

"Kunjilal, a resident of the same village, along with his three friends Thursday barged into the residence of the woman and raped her after threatening her mother-in-law with a knife," deputy superintendent of police Kuldeep Narayan told IANS on phone.

Afterwards, the four repeatedly hit the victim on her head, killing her on the spot, added Narayan.

Police have registered a case against the four men following the complaint registered by the woman's mother-in-law.

"All four are absconding. We have detained family members of the accused in order to trace them. Raids are also being conducted in various parts of the village to nab the four," said Narayan.
