The Parable of the Lost Sheep: Luke 15 1Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." 3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. The Parable of the Lost Coin 8"Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' 10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." The lost sheep and the lost coin speak of God’s indescribable love and grace. The great principle here is that the unchanging, unconditional grace and love of God being shown upon men without men asking for it and even without realizing the danger zone he was in. Sometimes we get so lost in life that we cannot even start to realize the sad plight that we are stuck into or it could also be the lack of knowledge that there is a complete and fulfilling life other than one is presently living. As we got lost deeper and deeper, life turned into a roller coaster where one’s fall and somersault into an endless dark pit, where there is no peace, no joy and rest. And as living apart from God takes their daily toll, sins quietly secured a dwelling place in us, the sin became part of our character that it is not even recognized as sins anymore but became an object, which is seen as a natural occurrence in life which consumes and occupies all our energy and waking thoughts. It is here that we did not even recognize sin as sin anymore and became lost like the coin and the sheep mentioned above. It is the amazing grace of God, which found us when we are knee thick in sins. The two parables describe the unfathomable nature of God’s grace- the love that seeks and the love that is simply received. The shepherd seeks his lost sheep and the woman her piece of money. The seekers seek earnestly where the one seek does not have any clue of being sought. They do not have any idea that they were lost or that there can be a much better life for them, just taking their worthlessness and life’s toll as their destiny. The sheep, wearied with its wanderings has not taken any step in returning. The shepherd seeks until he finds it and then when he does, lay it on his shoulders and carries it home. He takes the whole charge, happy to recover his sheep. This is the heart of heaven. It is the work of Christ, the Good Shepherd. The woman who seeks the coin sweeps the house until she finds the piece she lost, showing us the pains, which God takes in His love, which is represented by the woman. Neither the sheep nor the piece of silver does anything towards its own recovery and this is the love and grace, which transcended all human thoughts. It is the Shepherd who rejoices when the sheep is found, the woman when the piece of money is in her hand, the Father when His child is in his arms. What an expression of who God is! It is in this that God is glorified in His grace. The work of grace, accomplished solely by the power of God, and complete in its effects, is presented to us in the parables. What about the lost souls in our present issue? They may laugh at you for telling them that they are lost because the pit that they are stuck into has become too dark and deep. Today, many people are lost in corruptions, sexual immoralities, perversions without awareness of being lost, without knowing that there is a life free from all these bondages, a life of untold peace and joy. The heart which seeks the sheep and the coin is still searching the lost ones today even the seek ones may not know that there is someone who is earnestly seeking them to give a much better life. Thus, God acts in the world, seeking sinners. The hateful and hating jealousy of self- righteousness finds no place in the mind of heaven where God dwells. And since this is God’s heart, the sinners draw near to hear Jesus. Man’s righteousness, which is but selfishness and sin, rejects grace. The Pharisees murmured against Him who was a witness of this grace in fulfilling it. Grace revealed its true dignity to those who needed it. Who can be an exceptional here? Loved and received by love, in our wretchedness, we are clothed with Christ to enter the house. God will not give up His grace. It becomes Him. God will be God: and God is love And what would be the position of those who sneers and point a finger towards the so- called sinners? Sad as it may sound, these people could be standing on the same clueless and lost ground with the very ones to whom the finger is pointed at, without the same awareness of being lost. A cross examination of oneself might tell us that we too might have been lost the same way in our self-righteousness and selfishness. If not, can we step out from our comfort zone and seek the loved ones to tell them that they are just being lost and that there is a way out with a much better life awaiting them. |
