Haryana focus on uplifting status of Scheduled Castes

Chandigarh: The Haryana Government has decided to spend over Rs.1,433 crore during the current financial year to raise the socio-economic status of 40.91 lakh Scheduled Castes population of the State, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Kartar Devi said here on Saturday.
She disclosed that a special cell in the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes had been created for monitoring and effective implementation of various schemes which ensured direct benefit to them. According to her, the total population of Haryana has been pegged at 211.45 lakh out of which the Scheduled Castes account for 19.35 per cent. To make them equal partners of development by raising their status, the State Government has earmarked 21.55 per cent of the total budget of Rs.6,650 crore under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) for them for the current financial year. These funds were not divertible and special focus would be on villages with 50 per cent or more population belonging to Scheduled Castes. The Minister disclosed that a new scheme, “Grant in Aid for Purchase of Books and Stationery Articles for Scheduled Castes Students in Post- Graduate/Post-Graduate Co-urses”, for the children of non -income taxpayer parents would be launched. Under th-is scheme, grants of Rs.2,000, Rs.4,000 and Rs.6,000 would be given to aspiring Scheduled Castes students at graduate, post-graduate levels.
