August 26, 2009: Christians fearful in West Bengal Anti-Christian people from the Moukahali Gram Panchayat repeatedly attacked the Christians and threatened to kill them if they continue to practice their faith in Chok Borhampur Village, Bishnupur, West Bengal. According to an EFI source, on August 20, about 15 anti- Christian people armed with knives, lathis and iron rods shouting anti- Christian’s slogans attacked a Christian identified as Khagen Majhi and threatened him of 'incidents like Orissa’s Kandhamal situation in West Bengal' and to disown the Christian faith or face dire consequences. Running from one Christian house to another in rage, the anti-Christians also beat up a believer identified as Manik Jana and also verbally abused and manhandled a Christian woman identified as Mrs Jharna Pradhan. The same incidents of persecution took place on July 29 this year and on December 25, 2006. The Christians have filed a police complaint at Bishnupur police station on July 30. After these repeated attacks, the Christians are living in fear and under tension. Kindly pray that the police will take appropriate action against the attackers and peace for all the Christians in the area.
Hindu radicals on August 9 disrupted the worship service of Indian Missionary Service and beat up Pastor V. James in Gulbarga, Karnataka. Rev. Noel Kotian, an EFI correspondent reported that around 10 a.m., about 20 Hindu extremists shouting anti- Christian slogans barged into the Sunday worship service, accused Pastor V. James of forceful conversion and assaulted him. The extremists dragged the pastor out to the street, kicked, punched and beat him up. The pastor flee to Ganigapura police station and filed a complaint against the extremists, according to reports. Later in the evening, around 9 :30 p.m., the extremists went to the pastor’s house and assaulted him again. They chased the pastor, his wife and four children away from the village. At press time, the pastor is hiding in another area. No action has been taken at the time of the report.
