Church attacked in Mumbai Alleged Hindu extremists ransacked Church of North India’s St Emmanuel Church on Sunday evening (1 August) and beat up Christians in Orlem, Malad (W), Mumbai. According to our correspondent Aashima Samuel, the incident took place when about eight armed extremists barged into the meeting. Church members Ponkumar Nadar and Nadarshish Nadar sustained serious injuries and received treatment in a local hospital. Catholic Secular Forum was reported as saying that the congregation was attacked with rods and other blunt weapons and that even women and children were not spared. Joseph Dias, secretary of CSF told media persons that the men were drunk when they barged into the church during the prayer meeting. The Malwani police have detained two persons. Abraham Mathai, vice-chairman, Maharashtra Minorities Commission, has called for strict probe into the incident. |
